About Cyprus
Location
Cyprus is strategically situated in the southeastern Mediterranean at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and the Middle East and covers an area of 9,251 sq. km. (3,572 sq. mi.).
Cyprus has a pleasant Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers and mild winters.
Cyprus follows Eastern European Time, which is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and Eastern European Summer Time during daylight saving time.
Population
The population in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus is estimated at approximately 983,000, with the majority being Greek Cypriots.
Cyprus is considered to have one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. Together with its climate and infrastructure, this makes Cyprus an ideal place to live and work.
Languages
English is widely spoken and used both in business and in some government-sector interactions. Greek and Turkish are the official languages of the Republic of Cyprus, and many government documents and forms are also available in English.
Legal system
Cyprus has a well-functioning common law legal system based largely on English common law principles.
Political System / EU
Cyprus gained independence in 1960 and joined the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Council of Europe.
Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004 and a member of the Eurozone since 2008.
European Union citizens are able to work, conduct business, travel to, and live in Cyprus under the EU free movement framework, subject to any applicable administrative requirements. In addition, Cyprus participates in the European Union’s internal market, where there is free movement of goods, services and capital.
Cyprus has a well-functioning presidential system of government under which human rights, political freedom and private property are respected and safeguarded.
Infrastructure
The island has advanced infrastructure to support businesses, excellent telecommunications, air and port connections.
There are two international airports, one in Larnaca and one in Paphos serving over 35 international airlines with daily flights to European and other international destinations.
Excellent banking facilities are also available, with a number of local and international banks operating in Cyprus and offering internet banking as one of their services. Specialised financial institutions also operate on the island.
